Matchday 8 of the Premier League, played from 23 to 25 October 2026, delivered a full set of results — ten matches, a shock at Villa Park, a climb up the table for Liverpool, and a humbling at Old Trafford for Manchester United.
The weekend began with Ipswich Town drawing 1-1 with Nottingham Forest. On Saturday, Aston Villa produced the result of the round, beating Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park thanks to a brace from Nicolas Jackson and ending City's unbeaten start to the season. Arsenal beat Everton 2-0, with goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel, and Coventry City lost 0-1 at home to Fulham, with Oscar Bobb scoring the only goal in the 80th minute.
Saturday also saw Chelsea lose 0-2 at home to Tottenham Hotspur in a match that turned on a sending-off: Cole Palmer was sent off for Chelsea, and Tottenham's goals came from a Mike Penders own goal and a strike from Mathys Tel. Crystal Palace lost 0-2 at home to Newcastle United, with William Osula and Harvey Barnes scoring the goals, and Hull City drew 1-1 with Brentford — Oli McBurnie scoring a penalty in the 24th minute for Hull before Dango Ouattara equalised in the 63rd.
Sunday brought two more big results. Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0 at Anfield, with Florian Wirtz's shot deflected in by Pascal Groß for an own goal in the 17th minute and Alexander Isak finishing from Bradley Barcola's cross in the 21st. Isak's goal was his sixth of the season and his third consecutive Premier League game with a goal. Brighton, beaten for only the second time this season, stayed third.
Sunday's other big result was Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth at Old Trafford. Rayan and Marcus Tavernier put Bournemouth ahead before half-time, and Evanilson sealed the win with a 71st-minute strike. United's winless run in the league extended to six matches — eight in all competitions — while Bournemouth extended their unbeaten run against United to seven meetings. The home fans booed the players off at full time, although manager Michael Carrick was applauded.
The last match of the round, Sunderland against Leeds United, finished 0-0, a point apiece in a game that neither side could win.
After the weekend, the table had a new shape. Manchester City remain top, with Arsenal second on goal difference. Brighton are third, Liverpool are fourth, Newcastle are up to eighth, and Sunderland are rock bottom in 20th place.
Matchday 8 will be remembered as the weekend the unbeaten run ended, the weekend Liverpool climbed into the top four, and the weekend Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford. Three stories, one weekend — and a title race that looks more open than it did on Friday.
