Matchday 3 of the Champions League produced one of the shocks of the season, a four-goal thriller in Munich, and three teams keeping perfect records — with Como's 4-1 win over Manchester United the headline result of the week.
The action began on Tuesday 20 October. Fenerbahçe drew 2-2 with Slavia Prague, Sabah lost 1-2 at home to Borussia Dortmund, Roma beat Slovan Bratislava 4-0, and Porto lost 0-1 to PSV Eindhoven. Liverpool beat Villarreal 4-3 in a seven-goal match, Manchester City thrashed AEK Athens 5-1, Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2, Napoli edged Bodø/Glimt 4-3, and Stuttgart drew 1-1 with Atlético Madrid.
Wednesday 21 October brought the biggest stories of the round. Como stunned Manchester United 4-1, a result that will go down as one of the great Champions League upsets and one that deepens United's troubles in a week in which they were also beaten 3-0 at home by Bournemouth in the Premier League. For Como, it was a famous night; for United, another heavy defeat to explain.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Lille lost 2-4 at home to Galatasaray, with Victor Osimhen scoring his first Champions League goal of the season. Aston Villa beat Viking 3-1, Club Brugge beat Lens 3-0, and Inter Milan beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 despite playing with a red card — a win built on resilience as much as quality.
The other big game of the night was Bayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal, a match full of incident. Bukayo Saka suffered a leg injury after just 10 minutes and was replaced by Eberechi Eze. Eze then scored a goal that was initially ruled offside, before Alphonso Davies equalised from a Harry Kane pass. Kane then won and converted a second-half penalty to put Bayern ahead, only for Declan Rice to equalise for Arsenal and earn the visitors a point.
Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig 4-1 on Wednesday, Real Betis beat Feyenoord 1-0, and Sporting CP lost 2-3 at home to LASK Linz. After three matchdays, Real Madrid, Aston Villa and Real Betis have kept 100 per cent records — three wins from three — and they sit among the early pace-setters in the competition.
The results leave plenty to play for when the competition returns. Matchday 4 is scheduled for 3-4 November, and the fixtures include Manchester United against Roma, Barcelona against Aston Villa, and Arsenal against Slavia Prague. United will need a response after the Como defeat, Barcelona face an Aston Villa side with a perfect record, and Arsenal continue their campaign at home.
Matchday 3 will be remembered for Como, for the goals in Munich, and for the sight of three teams still perfect after three games. The Champions League has a habit of producing nights like this — and this week produced several of them at once.
